SUKKUR: The establishment of a medical board to ascertain the mental status of Amar Lal, who was accused of allegedly desecrating the Holy Quran in a roadside mosque at Reharki Road near Daharki on July 26, has been ordered by the Sukkur DIG Captain (retd) Feroze Shah on Tuesday.
"A medical board is being constituted for a checkup of the accused, Amar Lal," Shah told The Express Tribune. Lal is currently in prison and is not mentally stable, said Shah.
An inquiry into the alleged blasphemy case revealed that the mosque in question was very old and abandoned, informed Shah, adding that people from the nearby village lit earthen lamps in the mosque for 'sawab'.
"Further inquiry revealed that on the night of July 25, somebody had placed a lit earthen lamp near the Holy Quran, that might have caught fire," claimed Shah, adding that people caught Lal, who was walking past the mosque early next morning.
Men held for firing at Hindu youth
Meanwhile, Ghotki police have arrested two suspects for their involvement in opening fire on two Hindu youth, Satesh Kumar and Avinash, out of which, Satesh, succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The suspects have been identified as police constable Nisar Kalwar and his friend, Niaz Rajri, informed Shah, while talking to the media in Mirpur Mathelo on Monday. Kalwar and Rajri have confessed to their crime and further investigation is under way, Shah added.
The DIG also announced a cash reward and commendation certificates for the police team that resolved the case.
