KARACHI: Current rains in Karachi have further deteriorated the condition of roads in the Korangi industrial area, causing logistical problems for the industrial units, said Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) President Zahid Saeed.

He said the situation needed urgent attention of the provincial government as the rains had also disrupted electricity supply to some areas in Korangi, which is one of the largest industrial areas located near the coastal belt of Karachi.

“The rainfall has created a host of problems, infrastructure in the Korangi industrial area has become messier, roads have been damaged and standing rainwater is causing problems in the transportation of goods,” he said.

“Due to these problems, more than 1.5 million workforce of the industrial area is not able to reach their workplaces on time,” Saeed said, adding export orders worth millions of dollars could be affected, which may cause a heavy loss to the national economy. The Korangi Causeway had also been flooded due to which traffic was diverted, causing congestion in the industrial area, the KATI president remarked.

“We had already told the authorities that due to dumping of garbage and trash in the Malir River, it is feared that in case of heavy rain, the Korangi industrial area and adjacent areas could face floods but no action has been taken.”

He urged Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to take immediate notice of the infrastructure condition in the Korangi and other industrial areas and sanction funds for development projects on a priority basis.

Asim Khan | 8 years ago | Reply Korangi Industrial Area is facing issues now, but SITE has been facing for ages. But, now after the rain it has become so bad, that it is scary to drive close to a container as it may lose its balance due to deep pits created by rain. It sure amazes me that 1 rain and the roads in karachi are like they were never made. It shows the level of corruption and incompetence of the local and provincial authorities. But, as before laws of the jungle apply to this city. We do not have PTCL landlines for the past 2 week and broadband services are unreliable but who can we complain to except ourselves.
