Fashion facts: 7 ways to break-out of a style rut

Seven different kinds of styling that will keep you away from a monotonous wardrobe

August 02, 2016

Are you sick of wearing the same combinations and style over and over again? If yes, then you’re definitely stuck in a style rut. Get yourself an escape immediately, because before you know it, things will start affecting your mood and make you feel dull and boring. Think about the fact that there is a lot you can do with just ten decent pieces of clothing in your closet too, only if you put your mind to good use. From mixing-and-matching accessories to sidelining denim and layering outfits, The Huffington Post helps you discover seven different kinds of styling that will keep you away from a monotonous wardrobe.

Step away from denim

For those who reach for skinny jeans routinely, might we suggest culottes or wide-leg pants? And if you still can’t stomach it, a denim culotte or pair of flares could suffice. The best part about this is that a fresh silhouette will prompt you to acknowledge different proportions and possibly choose different tops to pair with your wider-leg bottoms.

Think in layers

Did you know that the employees at most companies are actually required to wear a least three items of clothing? That means you can never stop at just a shirt and pants (boring!) — you must always include an accessory. The easy way out of this is via layering your outfit. Layers add interest to attire and allow you to be more original in your styling. Start small with a simple bandana necktie atop your off-shoulder blouse.

Add structure to your handbag

The fastest way to look more put together? A lady bag. Your tote may be able to hold everything but the kitchen sink but it’s not always the most fashion-forward option. Instead, give the slouchy bag a rest and reach for a top-handle purse that doesn’t crumble when you place it down.

Try a monochrome look (other than black or white)

While this surely does not mean you have to give up on your safe colour, it is important to deter from the usual black and white combination. But, trying a head-to-toe blush pink or orangey-red ensemble may give you a whole new perspective and a couple of new compliments. Try this out with a dress and blazer set or creates your own combo with items you already have in your closet.

Don’t waste weekends

It’s easy to fall back on basic t-shirt and sweat pants but truth be told, that’s doing nothing for your creative juices. Use the weekends to take extra time out and brainstorm your outfit choices. Then test-drive them. We promise, a flowy sun dress is as breezy and comfortable as those pants.

Learn to love a sneaker with skirts

Today, it’s more than acceptable than ever to wear flats each day of the week. And that goes double for anything sporty. If your heel addiction has reached Carrie Bradshaw heights, try switching out the stilettos for a fresh white pair of sneakers. Tuck a casual white tee into a high-waisted skirt and put those running shoes on to complete your look.

Grab a pair of oversized earrings

If you take anything away from this list, we hope it’s that dangling earrings are your when-all-else-fails, foolproof way to punch up any outfit. (They’re also making a huge comeback and everyone should get on board, regardless.) Long feather earrings, in particular, are a must-have!
