Afghan repatriation deadline extended

LAHORE: The federal government has extended the repatriation deadline for Afghan refugees till Dec 31, 2012.

The announcement was made by Minister for States and Frontier Regions Najmuddin Khan and Afghan Minister Abdul Raheem in a press conference in Lahore on Friday.

Khan said 3.5 million Afghan refugees had been repatriated thus far, while arrangements were being made for another 1.7 million refugees.

He said up to 80,000 national identity cards of refugees had been cancelled, and that action would be taken against those that owned property in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the Afghan Minister has welcomed Pakistan's move to extend the deadline.
