KARACHI: The chief minister's deadline to clear the city's garbage, which ends today, may not bring respite to trash-accustomed residents of the metropolis but citizens may get some relief as the government plans to invite Chinese companies to clean up three districts of the city.

Local government minster Jam Khan Shoro, who briefed Chief Minister (CM) Qaim Ali Shah about the letter of intent (LoI) sent to the Chinese companies on Wednesday, told The Express Tribune that the process was initiated in December. "We have decided to issue LoI to the South and East district municipal corporations (DMC) and will soon sign an agreement," he said, adding that they are also looking for a firm for District Korangi.

Talking about the cost and time period of the projects, the minister said, in District East, it will cost $9.65 million and, in District South, $14.254 million per year. He informed that the companies will be working for seven years if the relevant DMCs are satisfied with their performance.

The minister informed that District East produces 322,357 tons while District South generates 491,590 tons of municipal solid waste per day.

He explained that the company will provide garbage bins to every household, from where the trash will be dumped into a covered dumpster and later be collected. "This the first time that mechanical garbage collection will be carried out by a private company," he claimed.

CM's adviser Waqar Mehdi told The Express Tribune that, "We have been criticised for not taking the matter of garbage dumping seriously but this criticism will turn false soon as the citizens will feel the change in the city's environment."
