Stepping ahead: Student from Karak stands first in entrance test

Izaz Gul took exam for academic session 2016-17

PESHAWAR: Although the government school he attended in Karak did not provide him with quality primary education, Izaz Gul of Islamia College University, Peshawar still managed to stand first in the entrance test result for University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar.

At least 15,691 students appeared in the entrance test for the academic session 2016-17 of the university. It was conducted on July 17 at centres in Peshawar, Abbottabad, Swat and DI Khan by Educational Testing and Evaluation Agency (ETEA).

The exam was taken by candidates from K-P, Fata, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Izaz scored 581 out of 800 marks while Muhammad Abbas came second with 575 marks.

Gleeful moment 

While talking to The Express Tribune about his academic excellence, Izaz said he also clinched the 20th position in the federal board of Islamabad in Secondary School Certificate exam result in 2015. Izaz added he also scored 490 out of 550 marks in the first year of FSc.



He is the eldest of his siblings – four brothers and three sisters. Their father teaches at government high schools in Karak district.

Since the condition of government schools is not particularly impressive in his district, his brothers are enrolled in private schools of Karak.

However, the boy has much on his plate to choose from since he also got cleared the test for Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute for the programme of mechanical engineering and was awaiting the result for the entrance test of NUST in Islamabad.

About educational institutes run by the government, Izaz said they were in desperate need of attention. He said politicians constructed schools and colleges in their constituencies for political point scoring but they were not focusing on the quality of education.

Although he has cleared the test for UET, Izaz was not sure whether he wants to study at the university.

Next in line

Abbas, the second position holder for the entrance test result of UET, is from Swat. He said Peshawar was his second option as he wanted to get into NUST, Islamabad.

Abbas passed SSC from Army Public School in Abbottabad and had scored 1,001 marks. Currently, he is also a student of Islamia College University, Peshawar. He plans to become an engineer.

The third position was clinched by Muhammad Idrees who earned 565 marks, Muhammad Akhtar Ahmad scored 533, Malik Muhammad Malik Saqib got 531, Muhammad Rehan Qadir 525 and Saqib Azam earned 518.
