Samsung to unveil smartphone 'Note 7' on August 2

Samsung has finally announced the release date for its next flagship smartphone, also putting an end to the uncertainty around the device name.

The company sent invitations to the press for an event on the August 2.

Although the device will be Samsung's sixth-generation Galaxy Note, rumours are ripe it will be called Note 7 to keep the name with the Samsung's flagship Galaxy S7 series.

To further cement the speculations, invitation sent by Samsung invitation has a "7" in it too.

Why Samsung is apparently abandoning the sixth numerical will remain a mystery till the media event.

The invitation shows the event will be held at 11am eastern time at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

We already have a fair idea as to what the phone would look like and the possible features it will pack, thanks to the timely leaks by seasoned tech journalist Evan Blass.

The journalist has one of the best track records when it comes to leaking information about smartphones and other gadgets.

Samsung flags better than expected Q1 profit rise

An earlier leak by Blass suggests the smartphone will feature a 5.7-inch screen with Samsung’s trademark dual curve display. It is also rumoured to have a iris scanner that can be used to unlock the device.

What the final device will look like we’ll know for sure after Samsung unveils it at August 2 event.
