KARACHI: Two men were shot dead by unidentified assailants in separate firing incidents in Korangi and Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Thursday.

A Pakistan Army soldier was shot and killed by gunmen in Rahimabad, Korangi, within the limits of Zaman Town police station. The deceased was identified as 27-year-old Irfan Ali, son of Muhammad Yasin. Police officials, however, do not believe that it was an act of targeted killing.

SHO Shahjahan Lashari said that the incident took place when at least two armed men were trying to escape on a motorcycle after looting a woman, while some people were trying to catch them. While fleeing, the suspects opened fire due to which Yasin, who was in a rickshaw nearby, was shot and killed.

The body was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities. According to the police, the deceased was a resident of Azad Kashmir and came to Karachi to visit his in-laws. A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.

Separately, a 50-year-old man, identified as Abdul Saleem Siddiqui, son of Abdul Hakeem Siddiqui, was shot and killed in Gulshan-e-Iqbal block 13-D1. SHO Safdar Mashwani said that the victim was shot and killed by a security guard deployed at a bungalow that is owned by a local builder, Khalid Kiyani.

The officer said that the police have arrested the security guard, who has been identified as Arshad. During questioning, the suspect has told the police that two suspects in a car were trying to carry out some criminal activities due to which he opened fire at them.

The accused claimed that the culprits managed to escape, however, the bullet mistakenly hit and killed a passerby. A case has been registered, while further investigation is under way.
