ISLAMABAD: A district and sessions court on Wednesday rejected bail plea of a suspect who had allegedly raped a patient at an intensive care unit of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) on April 9.

Suspect Krishan Kumar worked at the hospital as a nurse.

He was booked by Karachi Company police on rape charges on April 11 and was subsequently arrested from Haripur the next day.

Kumar was remanded into police custody for three days and later sent to Adiala Jail on judicial remand.

In early May, the suspect applied for post-arrest bail through his lawyer Muhammad Naseem Khan. In the application, Kumar said he had falsely been implicated in the FIR.

He also claimed that a medical board formed by the hospital to probe the matter found that the victim was not subjected to sexual assault.

Kumar also pointed out that the FIR was lodged with a delay of three days, without mentioning time of the incident.

Inspector Zulfiqar, who was investigation officer for the case, told The Express Tribune that the medical tests and forensic examination confirmed that the sexual assault took place.

He said that the police, during investigation, found that Kumar was guilty of the crime.

Karachi Company SHO Inspector Mubarik Ali said that the police probe confirmed that the victim was raped.

After hearing arguments on the bail application and examining the case record, Additional District and Sessions Judge Raja Asif Mehmood turned down the bail plea.

Police have completed investigation and submitted the charge sheet against the suspect to the court.

The suspect has not been indicted.

The victim, who was around 22 years of age and admitted to Pims surgical ward ICU with multiple health problems, died on May 16 at the hospital.

The woman was said to be suffering from a rare immune disorder which affects body’s peripheral nervous system.

The disease had affected spinal cord of the woman and paralysed her.

She hailed from Swabi District in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
