LOS ANGELES: A small lock of David Bowie's hair is being auctioned in California and is expected to fetch upwards of $4,000 dollars.

Heritage Auctions said the snippet of the late singer's pale blond hair, tied with blue thread, came from a former employee of the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in London.

The woman was tasked with recreating Bowie's 1983-era hairdo for his wax figure at the museum and kept the lock as a souvenir.

The hair will go on the block Saturday as part of an auction in Beverly Hills and has so far attracted a bid of $2,000.

The iconic singer, one of the most influential artists in pop history, died in January following a battle from cancer that he had kept hidden from the public.
