ISLAMABAD: A district and sessions court granted bail to the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazlur Rehman (JUI-F)’s Senator Hafiz Hamdullah for “threatening and trying to assault” rights activist Marvi Sirmed on a television talk show on June 10th.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Raja Asif Mehmood granted bail to the senator till June 23rd against the surety of Rs30,000 after he appeared before the court on Thursday.

The court directed the officials of the Kohsar police to appear before the court along with the record of the case on June 23rd.

Hamdullah, Sirmed, Barrister Masroor Shah and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s Fayyazul Hasan Chohan were guests on a television show to discuss recent honour killings, when the incident took place.

The police booked the senator under sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Sirmed.

Sirmed filed the application against Hamdullah after he allegedly threatened her and attempted to thrash her during a television show.

In the bail plea, the counsel for Hamdullah said that a false case has been registered against his client. He added that Hamdullah should be granted bail as the PPC sections fall within the category of bailable offences.

While accepting his request, the court granted bail with direction to the police to come along with the record of the case on the next date of hearing.
