KARACHI: The management of Imtiaz Superstore has been directed to clean the silt it earlier dumped in the Lyari River in Gulshan-e-Iqbal to make space for illegal parking or else the superstore would be sealed.

Karachi commissioner Asif Hyder Shah issued directives to District East deputy commissioner Asif Jan Siddiqui on Wednesday during a high-level meeting on the monsoon and the condition of drainage system in the city.

Imtiaz store claims to have parking space for 300 vehicles

He said that Imtiaz Superstore must remove the mud at its own cost and asked for a daily report. He also said that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has already issued tenders for the cleanliness of 30 large nullahs.

According to Shah, the major hurdle in the water flow in nullahs was either garbage or encroachments. He lamented that if the municipalities concerned had addressed these issues on time, the situation would have been much better.

He requested Corps Headquarters representative Lieutenant Colonel Bilal Khalid to nominate some army officials to monitor the process of cleaning the nullahs in the city along with the city’s deputy commissioners.

Super stores should be classified as industry, as are new housing projects. There should be a new law passed in the provincial assembly classifying Super Stores as Industrial Projects. Any new super store coming up should undertake Environmental Impact Assessment which involves public hearing and submission of undertaking by the owner that they will not damage the area. Sindh Environmental Protection agency puts the projects to experts on their clearance can a project or Superstore can operate.
Tribune with its caring journalism can project this approach
In Newzealand you cannot open a Diary ( Corner shop) without approval of neighbours
As an old timer I say we got Pakistan after great sacrifice. Let selfish Industrialist like Imtiaz be not allowed to destroy our residential localities as being done in Gulshan E Iqbal And Bahadurabad. Don’t the Elected representative of the area have any say in this matter?Recommend

Update: The Sindh government on Thursday removed Karachi Commissioner Asif Hyder Shah from his position. In a notification signed by Sindh Chief Secretary Muhammad Siddique Memon, Shah has been asked to report to the Services, General Administration & Coordination Department “with immediate effect”.

So much for Imtiaz being sealed directives.Recommend

About time. Most of these super stores are built on residential plots that are at best suitable for a corner dairy/grocery shop or small businesses – and they put absolutely zero thought into parking and traffic woes that their store will create for the area’s residents.

All these super stores should be shut down if they don’t have a proper parking permit – we have enough ugly eyesore department stores and shopping malls here in Karachi already.Recommend

The best store as regard to parking is the Metro Cash n Carry Safari Chapter. but their prices are way higher than Imtiaz and Chase up. If they offer items on whole sale rates than nobody will look at Imtiaz and Chase up.Recommend

These black money holders are bent to destroy human life in Karachi and elsewhere also. Why Lyari Nady is allowed to be used as parking. Even construction is not allowed in river bed why this man was allowed and who allowed him. Action be taken against the authority. This so called super market be changed into residential area and Imtiaz be asked to carry out business elsewhere away from localities. Those have their own transport can reach even to Hub area. For these Car Waly Begmat price is of no consideration.Recommend

No time limit has been set for removal of silt from Lyari river bed. This means nothing will happen. Commissioner is passing the buck to Corpse HQ.Let us see the response!Recommend

First of all they have made it on a wrong place and yes we are agreeing that they have made it but they should get much more time to clean it. If u all see that chase is also made on the front of it but they have made the parking on a less space but still they did not do mess just like Imtiaz store did and Imtiaz store has 3 large space underneath them of parking which they are not using it. The governs should have a meeting with the onwer of Imtiaz store and try to convence them and they have made it,they have done this mess so why the governs are saying them its their property and i have seen soo many people sleeping over there at the river have they asked the goverment.Recommend

Masses in Karachi are moving dead they can’t do anything. Let them rob of their basic rights and mint money from this pathetic city. Citizens of this city need to take matter in their own hands else nothing changed. I have no hope for this lost city. Recommend
