Spellbound: ‘Dothraki is a real language’

Emilia Clarke gives tutorial on how to master language spoken in ‘GoT’

As she recently revealed on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen on the highly acclaimed HBO drama Game of Thrones, has mastered the Dothraki language.

The actor, who will next be seen in romantic drama Me Before You, explained the language to the host and much to the surprise of the audience sang a song in Dothraki as well. She went on to share that Dothraki is a real language, not merely made up words for the show, reported Rolling Stone. “You can study it,” she quipped, before adding that linguist David Peterson created the language especially for Game of Thrones.

Clarke who plays Daenerys Targaryen on the show, explained that she receives the script in English first, followed by an mp3 of the Dothraki version. She also joked that at times, she ends up messing up the words because majority of the crew members can’t tell if it’s right or wrong.



Later, in an attempt to teach Meyers and the audience how they too can master the language, Clarke sang a version of Hanson’s hit son Mmmbop in Dothraki, to which the host said, “I can’t stress how much less catchy that is.” For die-hard GoT fans who wish to learn Dothraki, a conversational course is now available on CD and book form titled Living Language Dothraki: A Conversational Language Course, written by David Peterson, shared Clarke.
