ISLAMABAD: The Anti Terrorism Court set free four Marriott attack accused due to lack of evidence on Wednesday.

The in-camera proceedings were held at the Adiala Jail in which 83 eyewitnesses recorded their statements.

The eyewitnesses did not identify any of the accused. All four accused including Dr Usman, Ameer Afzal, Tehseenullah Jan and Rana Ilyas filed applications for their acquittal on the basis of non availability of evidence against them.

The court approved their applications and ordered their acquittal. Unknown terrorists attacked the Marriot Hotel in Islamabad on 20th September 2008. 53 people were killed in the attack.

Shahzada Sultan | 14 years ago | Reply I think the causes of these acquittals lie somewhere else. Courts are boound by the law of the land; it is primarily for the prosecution (the investigating agencies, in this case) to gather and present evidence sufficiently to bind a culprit down. Faced with a lack of evidence, no court can simply throw the accused persons behind the bar; everyone is presumed innocent until proved guilty. I think we need to focus on enhancing the investigative capability of our investigating agencies. They definitely lack a lot of modern tools of investigation.
