KARACHI:

The Sindh Public Accounts Committee ordered an inquiry on Monday into alleged corruption in purchasing land for a stadium in Sukkur. The decision to launch the inquiry was taken in a meeting, presided over by committee chairperson Salim Jalbani, as the financial audits of year 2011-12 were being scrutinised. The committee has sought response from the Sukkur commissioner and deputy commissioner within two weeks. According to the audit report, embezzlement of Rs230 million surfaced in the revenue, health, highways, and works and service departments as well. The district government inflicted a loss of Rs12 million to the national exchequer by purchasing 10 acres in Saleh Pat tehsil for the stadium’s construction, the committee was informed. The committee also took stern notice against the  health and local government departments for the purchase of medicines and computers and recommended to suspend officials.
