LOS ANGELES: After receiving mixed responses to her revealing Met Gala outfit, Madonna hit back at critics, saying her fashion choice was to make a statement in support of gender equality. The singer, who turned heads at the star-studded event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit in New York with her racy outfit, took to Instagram to seemingly hit back at critics.

“We have fought and continue to fight for rights around the world. When it comes to women’s rights we are still in the dark ages,” Madonna wrote alongside a photograph of herself.  “My dress at the Met Ball was a political statement as well as a fashion statement,” she added.  “The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an ageist and sexist society.”

The Crazy for You hit-maker wore a custom Riccardo Tisci-designed black Givenchy gown which she teamed with a pair of latex knee-length boots and a silver headpiece for the event. She flashed her torso which was only covered by lace overlay and black tape. Speaking about her outfit, she shared, “I have never thought in a limited way and I’m not going to start. We cannot effect change unless we are willing to take risks.”

She also revealed her derriere through lacy fabric over a skimpy black leotard. Madonna covered her arms and thighs in black tape, which is commonly, used for sports injuries.
