Kashmir varsity: Over 48 students diagnosed with hepatitis

The number may increase as screening of 3500 students is in progress

MUZAFFARABAD:


Over 48 students of the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (UAJK) were found to be suffering from hepatitis.


“Following blood screening of over 3,000 students, initial reports indicated that 48 male and female students were infected with hepatitis B and C viruses. Of the infected students, 13 suffer from hepatitis C. The number may increase as screening of 3500 students is in progress,” said Screening Awareness and Treatment for Hepatitis (Sath) Project focal person of UAJK Dr Rauf.


He said that blood screening of all the students and faculty members would be completed within a year. He said that normally hepatitis treatment costs from Rs300,000 to Rs8 million.
