Busted: Man arrested for smuggling phones

The culprit, Rizwan, is a resident of Karachi

Customs officials arrested a man at the Shaikh Zayed International Airport on Tuesday for trying to smuggle 313 smartphones and 141 phone batteries from Dubai to Rahim Yar Khan.


The man was sent on seven days physical remand on Wednesday. Police said the phones and batteries were worth Rs10.553 million.

Additional Collector Ghulam Mustafa, Deputy Collector Ali Malik, Assistant Collector Tanveer Ahmad addressed a press conference in Multan on Wednesday.

They said the culprit, Rizwan, was a resident of Karachi. He had made several trips abroad in the last few months, the customs officials said. They said the Customs Department had received a tip-off in this regard. “We are now trying to ascertain whether Rizwan was working with an international network of smugglers.”

Airport officials said the authorities have taken two Customs officials, a superintendent and a customs inspector, in custody over abetment suspicions.
