ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah has asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to formulate a new National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.

The NFC Award determines the distribution of resources among federating units. However, after the expiry of the 7th NFC Award on June 30, 2015, it was extended for one year till June 2016 through a presidential order.

In a letter sent to the prime minister on Friday, Shah expressed apprehension that the 7th NFC award was likely to be further extended for another fiscal year 2016-17, through another presidential order.

He said it will be fair and in fitness of things that the new NFC Award be formulated as early as possible in order to have realistic distribution of resources.

“At present distribution of funds among federating units is based mainly on population. However, other factors like poverty, underdevelopment, backwardness etc., may also be given more weightage in distribution formula,” Shah wrote.
