ISLAMABAD: Federal Minster for Science and Technology, Rana Tanveer Hussain on Wednesday said the government has made the import of machinery for Halal food industry duty free. Addressing a ceremony organised by Ministry of Science and Technology and USAID, he said the Halal food industry could play a constructive role to strengthen the country’s economy. The minister said the establishment of Halal Food Authority in Pakistan would help regulate the import and export of food items in Pakistan. The local meat industry, he hoped, would be able to meet the international demand of Halal food. Tanveer said currently trade of Halal items was worth $3 trillion in which Pakistan’s share was a meagre $25 million. He hoped with the establishment of Halal Food Authority the country’s share would reach $1 billion.
