FAISALABAD: At least 19 people including two children were killed in a collision between a passenger bus and a truck in Faisalabad early on Wednesday, officials said.

The accident took place near the town of Theekriwala in Punjab province due to "speeding and reckless driving", senior police official Afzaal Ahmed Khosa told AFP.

"Nineteen passengers including two women and two children were killed," Khosa said.

Dr Naeem Hashmi, who works at the Allied Hospital in nearby Faisalabad city, said 15 injured people were being treated in the emergency department. Two of them were in a serious condition.

Pakistan has an appalling road safety record due to poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.

More than 4,600 people were killed in road traffic accidents in 2013, the last year the government released official data.

SHAH | 8 years ago | Reply It is the onus of bus driver to be cautious, defensive driver keeping in mind the lives of the passengers he has taken charge to safely transport them to their destinations; It is important that these kinds of drivers who love to be a bully and love to play Russian roulette on the road with on coming traffic, and due to their reckless mindset himself and those innocent passengers suffer in the shape of mental, physical agony and even death. I hope this driver has been sent to the place on a one way ticket, from where there is no returning back;

If we had a government at the federal and provincial level which bothered about the safety of citizens - and then took action - there would be no unqualified drivers on the road, and reckless driving would be minimal. Everyone knows that the most corrupt institution is the police, and yet the rulers will not even consider the idea of reforming it.

seaman | 8 years ago | Reply @Mirza Asif Baig: These ill trained bus drivers are the cause of these now quiet frequent accidents. Even on motorway bus drivers drive with scant regard for human life , break laws regularly and overtake dangerously. The only way is to fine them heavily and train them properly.
