World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan has granted 100 plants to University of Karachi (KU), informed KU registrar and environmental studies professor Dr Moazzam Ali Khan.
He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a plantation campaign organised by KU Registrar Office in collaboration with KU centre of excellence for women studies on Sunday.
The total area of forests in the country has decreased to 60,000 square miles from 150,000 square miles, remarked Khan. Increasing deforestation is affecting the ecosystem due to which we are facing heavy rains, floods, earthquakes and different natural disasters, he added.
"WWF is playing a vital role in making our environment clean and pollution-free," said Khan, informing that the plants are phycus, amaltas and ashoka.
It is our collective duty to organise plantation campaigns, said KU admissions director Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi, who also inaugurated the ceremony.
