SARGODHA:

Sargodha District Jail Superintendent Sultan Ali said on Friday that the prison was overcrowded and required an extension to house the inmates incarcerated there.

“At its current capacity, the prison cannot house all the inmates. At least 60 constables are needed for security of the prisoners.”

Talking to APP, the superintendent said there were 1,318 prisoners including 11 women and 16 children. He said the jail could accommodate 713 prisoners. He said funds were also needed for vocational training and provision of medical facilities for the prisoners. “There are not enough educational facilities for the prisoners at the jail.”

The superintendent said this issue should be addressed by the government as soon as possible. “We have asked funds to enhance security and to build more cells.

We also require more prison reform programmes as the current facilities are inadequate.”
