LAHORE:

Lahore High Court (LHC) issued notices on Monday to the federal government, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) chairman and other respondents in a petition challenging the award of a contract for the “refurbishment of Mangla Dam” to a blacklisted French company.

Advocate Sheraz Zaka, the petitioner’s counsel, told Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza that the contract had been awarded to Alstom Hydro in violation of rules. “The company is a subsidiary of a blacklisted French company Alstom SA, recently indicted by a US court,” he said.

The lawyer said that in light of the superior court’s judgement a contract worth Rs10 billion that involved public money could not be given to a company whose parent company had been blacklisted.

Zaka requested the court to summon details of the contract and restrain the respondent authorities from awarding the contract to the company.

Justice Mirza sought replies from the respondents by May 2.
