Singer Rihanna believes she can inspire young women

LOS ANGELES: Rihanna may have achieved a great lot when it comes to her music but the edgy R&B singer has yet to be given the title of a role model. Fortunately, this has not stopped her from branding herself as an inspiration for young women. The 28-year-old won the Rock Star Award at the Black Girls Rock! ceremony in New Jersey on Friday and used her acceptance speech to encourage her fans to love themselves, reported femalefirst.co.uk.

“Thank you so much for celebrating us in a world that does not celebrate us enough. The minute you learn to love yourself, you will not want to be anyone else,” said Rihanna. The Pon de Replay hit-maker went on to speak about the image she holds in the media and how she can still be much more than that. “Role model is not the title they like to give me. But I think I can inspire a lot of young women to be themselves and that is half the battle,” she claimed. “Hopefully one day, I’ll be raising my own little black girl who rocks,” added Rihanna.



Black Girls Rock is a platform created to highlight the achievements of women of colour, in fields such as art, music and philanthropy and community service. It was founded by musician and social entrepreneur Beverly Bond in 2006. Beverly also serves as its chief executive officer.
