ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Textile Industry urged the government to announce a permanent minister to promote the sector. The meeting, chaired by Senator Mohsin Aziz, discussed the challenges faced by the textile industry; value added textile, sick industrial units, cess levy on imported cotton and utilisation of funds by the ministry and its attached departments. Aziz said that the government has not issued the notification of industrial rehabilitation committee and wrong policies were forcing investors to incur huge financial losses. He said the sector should be given relief on electricity tariff and load-shedding should be reduced to a minimum. Senator Hari Ram informed the meeting that cotton production during the upcoming season was expected to remain lower compared to the previous year.
