ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has asked the ministry of commerce to take steps for winning greater access for Pakistani products in new markets abroad.

Talking to Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim at the Prime Minister’s House on Friday, Gilani said an export-led growth will help in employment generation and poverty alleviation.

He also asked Fahim to take all stakeholders on board in implementation of import policy initiatives, adding public-private partnership should be the focus of the policy. He said import of Pakistani products by European countries was in line with the government’s policy for enhanced trade with the world because “we believe in trade and not aid.” The policy, he added, will also help enable the government to ensure early rehabilitation of flood-hit people. However, he observed that the economy was facing lots of challenges too.

Reiterating the policy of reconciliation, he said “we will be able to overcome these challenges,” adding the government was taking all political parties on board to reach consensus on a unified economic agenda which will provide relief to the common man.

Separately, Gilani met Board of Investment (BOI) Chairman Saleem H Mandviwalla and State Minister for Finance Hina Rabbani Khar who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House.

Gilani assured them that the government is committed to providing all facilities to local and foreign investors. “Due to business-friendly policies of the government, a number of investors are planning to invest in various fields, including the energy sector,” he added.

Mandviwalla apprised the prime minister of his meetings with Pakistani expatriates and local business houses during his recent visit to Turkey.

He also briefed him about the upcoming Economic Forum to be held in Rome from January 26-27 and Malaysia Conference to be held in March.
