Bilateral relations: ‘Develop trade ties with Iran’

MCCI President said Pakistan should enhance electricity imports to 1,000 megawatts

“The government should develop trade ties with Iran. Lifting of economic sanctions will enable stronger economic ties between the two countries,” said Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) president Fareed Mughis Sheikh on Friday.

Talking to The Tribune, Sheikh said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to Pakistan had opened new avenues for enhancing interaction between the two countries.

“Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s efforts for expanding economic ties Iran should be appreciated,” he said.

“Pakistan and Iran can maintain a strong trade partnership. “A free trade agreement between the two countries would be a good development if it is materialises,” he said.

Sheikh said Pakistan should enhance electricity imports to 1,000 megawatts.

“A gas import deal which was to bring a revolution in the Pakistan’s energy market is still under sanctions. Every option should be explored to expedite its completion,” he said.  He said the two countries should consider inking a new agreement on energy.

He said Tehran’s inclination to join the economic corridor project was a good sign.
