LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday stayed allotment and construction on the residential plots on land specified for a recreational park.

The 110-kanal land, part of the Lahore Press Club Housing Scheme, was allotted to 295 new voting members of the Lahore Press Club (LPC) by the outgoing office bearers ahead of the LPC annual elections.

Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed ordered that no land specified for a park or green-belt can be converted into a residential area.

The judge issued this order on a petition filed by Din Muhammad Dard, a member of the LPC, who had objected to the LPC body distributing allotment forms among members. He contended that the practice was in violation of the law since land reserved for parks could not be given away as residential plots.

The judge issued notices, for February 11, to Punjab Journalist Housing Foundation managing director as well as Sarmad Bashir, the outgoing president and aspirant for the same office for another term.

The judge remarked that a prima facie bar existed on converting land allocated for a park into residential plots. He noted that in this case, not only had land been allocated for a park but work was also underway. “A tube well is operational, electric polls for lights have been installed, a walk way is under construction and a fence has been fixed around the park,” the judge said. He said that the outgoing president’s order to allot the land to voting members appeared to be an ‘election stunt’.
