Tying a different knot

Neckties are to men what necklaces are to women, well, sort of

Neckties are to men what necklaces are to women. Well, sort of.

Your tie can add oomph to an ensemble by adding that little personal touch. Even though it is just an accessory, once a man wears a tie you can see how his body language changes. The back becomes more erect, the shoulders go back and the torso is pushed forward subconsciously.

TIE 101

An awfully patterned tie or a harsh contrast can weigh down a perfectly formal look on a man. Here are our quick tips for men wanting to make a statement:

• The first hunch that something doesn’t look right is your intuition, and you should trust it whole-heartedly.

•  Try to keep your shirt and tie plain if your suit is patterned, and if your suit is a plain colour then you have a small window to experiment with your tie, shirt and other accessories. To play it safe, the best option for every man is a plain white shirt. You can go a little further and select pastel coloured shirts, but stick with shades closer to white.

Tie-Ing It All together

Tying the perfect tie is an art in itself and there are quite a few ways of tying your tie to form different knots. The ‘Trinity’ and ‘Eldredge’ knots have been gaining popularity after being shared by many bloggers and style-influencers on Instagram. But there is nothing better than a classic ‘Windsor’ knot – simple, plain, elegant, and dapper.

For a perfect ‘Windsor’ knot, you should try the double-knot technique. This type of knot uses the thin end of the tie, which is wrapped around the two ends close to your neck. A better way to understand this is through the illustration.

This knot is slightly trickier for thick ties because you end up with a ginormous knot, which isn’t very appealing. Though the ‘Windsor’ knot goes best with skinny ties, if you want to experiment with your regular tie, pull the ends of the tie and keep nudging the knot until you get a proportionate size.

To keep your look sharp, use a nice tie clip as an additional accessory. The right way of wearing it is by making sure it fastens your tie and shirt together, and is placed between the second and third button of your shirt.
