Several workers fell unconscious while goods worth millions of rupees were gutted when a fire broke out in the basement of a private paint-manufacturing factory in Karachi’s SITE area on Monday morning.

At least four workers who fainted due to heavy plumes of smoke were rushed to a nearby medical facility. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Baldia factory fire was planned by extortionists, says JIT report

When the fire broke out, factory workers tried to extinguish it on their own but it spread quickly because of the presence of chemical containers inside the building, sources revealed.

At least six fire brigade vehicles arrived at the factory and started efforts to extinguish the heavy fire which could not be brought under control until the filing of this report.

“It could take us hours to extinguish the fire completely because of the presence of chemicals at the factory,” fire brigade officials said.
