Meat exports: ‘Sector has potential’

LAHORE:
The meat export industry in Pakistan is growing 30% each year and it harbours potential for further expansion, said University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Head of Meat and Nutrition Dr Muhammad Hayat Jaspal on Wednesday. He said that in 2005 Pakistan’s meat exports were about $29 million, while in 2015 these grew to an astounding $243.5 million, exhibiting a 30% annual growth. “Despite having a top beef exporting nation in our neighbourhood and strong rivals globally, so far Pakistan has held its ground in the regional market of Middle East,” said Jaspal. “But in order to enter emerging markets of China and Malaysia, the meat sector of Pakistan needs to invest in human capital and acquire scientific knowhow, both of which it severely lacks.”
