PESHAWAR: Doctors at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) said Tehreek-e-Nifaz-Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM) chief Maulana Sufi Muhammad could not undergo surgery and sent him back to Central Prison Peshawar.

Officials at the hospital said the TNSM chief was brought to LRH following urological complaints on Wednesday. However, doctors concluded Sufi Muhammad’s health did not allow surgery.

The TNSM chief, who has been imprisoned at Central Prison Peshawar, was taken to the accident and emergency department at the facility. LRH officials said tests — required to ascertain if Sufi Muhammad could undergo surgery — were carried out and it was concluded he was not fit for any major invasive procedure.

“We examined him but his health will not allow us to operate, so we sent him back since we don’t want to take a risk. We have put him on medication,” a senior health official said.

He added a urine test will be carried out, but at the prison. The official said the TNSM chief was brought amid strict security and no one was informed about his examination at the facility.
