‘Heuvel has reservations about contract’

Bajwa downplays hockey coach's security concern.

KARACHI: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has broken the silence on Michel Van Den’s absence and admitted the coach’s concerns were not due to security apprehensions.

The PHF Secretary Asif Bajwa said Heuvel, who coached the gold-winning Asian Games side, had reservations about his two-year contract. “We are working on removing his doubts,” said Bajwa.

The Dutch coach refused to return after the victory, earlier saying that it was because of security concerns. Heuvel had also asked the PHF to set the team’s camp in the Netherlands, saying he can deliver more efficiently there.

According to another PHF official, negotiations are underway and the situation on his return would be cleared soon.

Hoping for maximum international action

Bajwa remains hopeful for the team having a busy international schedule this year. “We’re in talks with various countries, and China and Malaysia have assured us they will tour Pakistan.” The secretary also added he was in talks with the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) for the revival of a bilateral series.

Pakistan are scheduled to tour Egypt next month while the African side is expected to pay a return visit in March.
