RAWALPINDI: A district court on Saturday awarded life term to a retired colonel for murdering his wife.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra announced the verdict against Colonel (retd) Rahat Qadeer and housemaid Salma Masih for murdering his wife Saeeda Bakht. The court awarded death sentence to the housemaid.

The incident took place in Army Officers’ Colony in Morgah area. Police had declared the death accidental. However, the CIA branch of the police took up the case after protest by the victim’s family.

The probe found out that the victim was clubbed to death. Regional police officer (RPO) had also suspended Morgah SHO and ASP for declaring the murder an accidental death.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs200,000 each on the two convicts. After the verdict, the victims’ father and brother said justice had been served.
