The grandiosity of the Academy Awards and its winners often tend to overshadow other things at the event, moments that may seem insignificant but are just as important, if not more. And that's exactly what happened at the 2016 Oscars.

Here's a list of things which you probably missed at the 88th Academy Awards:

1. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy only woman of colour to win Oscar this year

The Pakistani filmmaker won her second Oscar for documentary A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, making her the only woman of colour to be honoured at the 88th Academy Awards.

Here's to hoping more people of colour win the coveted award next year. Talk about #OscarsSoWhite, sheesh.

2. Tom Hardy's badass phone cover

Did you know that Tom Hardy's phone case features a picture of him and his dog? And the badass actor couldn't care less what others think about it.

The Mad Max actor whipped out his phone on the red carpet to take a selfie with his beautiful wife Charlotte Riley and Oscar winner (finally!) Leonardo DiCaprio.

Hardy lost out on Best Supporting Actor for his role as John Fitzgerald in The Revenant, but he's still a winner in our eyes.

3. Brie Larson hugged every sexual assault survivor

Lady Gaga's powerful performance, with sexual assault survivors present on stage, left the audience deeply touched. But Brie Larson was more than just moved; to show her feeling of solidarity, Larson made it a point to hug each and every survivor as they stepped down from the stage.

Larson, who won Best Actress for her role in Room, individually embraced all the people before giving one big hug to the remaining few.

She is proof that a little act of kindness and empathy go a long way.

4. Jacob Trembley's ridiculously good looking parents

The 9-year-old star's parents made an appearance on the red carpet and blew everyone away with their mighty good looks.

Their selfie in the car, though, was everything. Needless to say, they became an instant internet sensation.

The genes are strong with this one and Yoda would wholeheartedly agree.

5. Ennio Morricone celebrates first win

Forget Leo, Ennio Morricone has finally won an award; Best Original Score for Hateful Eight after five Oscar nominations.

In his almost 60-year-long illustrious career, the Italian song composer has over 500 credits to his name, including films like The Good, The Bad, The Ugly (1966), Arabian Nights (1974), Kill Bill (2004) and Django Unchained (2012).

Nobody was more proud than Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi who, upon hearing the news, instantly tweeted, "Superb Maestro, finally!"

6. Whoopi Goldberg mistaken for Oprah

Live coverage can be a cumbersome task, and for one beauty website Total Beauty, the Oscars became a juggernaut causing them to tweet a picture of Whoopi Goldberg, but accidentally tagging Oprah in it.

And of course, all hell broke loose.

But Oprah took the matter in a jovial manner, when she saw the tweet, she gave a perplexed and amused look.

Total Beauty immediately took down the tweet, but the damage had been done.

To make up for their mistake, they offered to donate $10,000 to Oprah and Whoopi's choice of charity.

You might want to be careful next time you tweet, honey. Remember what happened to Justine Sacco?

7. Leo getting his Academy Award engraved

We don't doubt he is on seventh heaven at the moment, but you witnessed nothing if you didn't see Leonardo DiCaprio getting his first ever Oscar engraved.

Smiling from ear to ear, Leo watched in anticipation as the etched plaque was carefully placed on his golden statue.

The excited actor even made small talk with the trophy engraver and asked him, “Do you do this every year?” only to reply to his own question in amusement, saying, “I wouldn’t know.”

Absolutely priceless.

8. Sam Smith's award acceptance speech gone awry

It was meant to be thought provoking and empowering, but it turned out horribly wrong.

Sam Smith took to the stage to accept his award for Best Original Song for Writing's on the Wall and misquoted Sir Ian McKellen. "No openly gay man has ever won the Oscar," McKellen had said in an interview with The Guardian in January. However, the Lord of the Rings actor was specifically talking about the Best Actor category, while Smith was referring to all categories at the Oscars.

Which is not true because previous openly gay winners of Academy Awards include Elton John, Stephen Sondheim and director Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar in 2009 for his film Milk.

His speech prompted Black to tweet a video of him winning the Oscar.

The singer has been mocked and ridiculed to such an extent that he has quit social media for now.

9. Chris Rock brought his daughter's Girl Scout troupe

Last year, Ellen rang the pizza delivery guy to feed the starved celebs at the Oscars, this year, Chris Rock brought his daughter's Girl Scouts cookies troupe to sell cookies to the audience.

What a great marketing gimmick, don't you think? And celebs were sold! They were so hungry that they couldn't help but gorge on the sugary treats. Regardless of whether they were on the stage...

or sitting in the crowd...

Easy there, tiger.

...because the anticipation of an Oscar can truly drain the energy out of you.

10. Stacey Dash and her clueless moment on stage

After Chris Rock's powerful monologue, Stacey Dash dropped a clueless joke on stage and left everyone very, very confused.

"I cannot wait to help my people out," Dash announced to a baffled audience. "Happy Black History Month!"

If you're lost, so was everyone in the audience. The line was a bit of satire playing off her widely commented-upon call earlier this year for an end to Black History Month.

Awkward.
