Crossfire: 3 killed in police encounter

One of the robbers’ accomplices managed to flee, police say

BAHAWALPUR: Three men were killed in a police encounter in an Uch Sharif police precinct on Saturday. Police said one of their accomplices had managed to flee.

The deceased were identified as Muhammad Irfan, Ateequr Rehman and Atta Muhammad. Police said they had been nominated in several murder, kidnap-for-ransom and armed robbery cases.

Uch Sharif SHO Tahir Khan was on a patrol assignment when he was informed that a man had been robbed near Hamza Petroleum.

Police said Abdul Ghafoor had contacted them about the incident. He had said that four armed men had snatched his valuables and motorcycle near the petrol station and were headed in the direction of Khairpur Daha.

SHO Tahir Khan then ordered policemen to set up pickets in the area. Police said that the SHO chased the criminals and spotted two of them near Nanday Laal. They went down a link road when they spotted the patrol vehicle.

Dhoorkot SHO Ghulam Rasool Bhatti was informed and he led a police team in the area. The two teams surrounded the men. Police said the robbers shot at them and they returned fire. A shootout ensued for some time. Three of the men had been badly wounded.

They died before they could be treated, police said. One of their accomplices had managed to flee. Police said they seized a 0.222 bore rifle and two 0.30 bore pistols lying near the bodies of the deceased. They also seized their motorcycles, one of which had belonged to Ghafoor.

Police said that they had registered a case and were investigating. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Bahawal Victoria Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Ateequr Rehman was identified by his brother Hafeezur Rehman and another man was identified by Raja Raam, an investigation officer.

In Multan, two suspected robbers were killed in a police encounter near Sayadanwali Bypass on Sunday. Police said that they had been shot dead by their own accomplices.

They said that they had received information that four men on two motorcycles had snatched Rs60,000 from a man in a Bahauddin Zakariya police precinct.

A patrolling team chased them up to Sayadanwali Bypass.

The men shot at the police and the cops retaliated. Police said two of the robbers were shot with “bullets from their own accomplices”.

They were badly wounded and fell to the ground but their accomplices had managed to flee. Police said they were looking for them.
