PESHAWAR: Jamaat-e-Islami K-P chapter has requested the Peshawar High Court to reduce petroleum prices and fix the selling price of petroleum below Rs40 per litre.

The petition was filed by the party’s provincial ameer Mushtaq Ahmad Khan through his counsels Khan Afzal and Mohiuddin Malik. According to the counsels, the government is deliberately not taking advantage of reductions in petroleum prices in the international market,

They added the government should sell it below Rs40 per litre in view of the price of petroleum in the global market.

They said the government is charging Rs75 per litre, saying selling petroleum at a higher price was illegal and in violation of the Constitution. Therefore, the respondents should be directed to guarantee rights of the citizens and reduce petroleum prices to bring them at par with rates in the international market.

Later, talking to the media, the provincial ameer said JI has launched a “Corruption-Free Pakistan movement” to rid the country of corruption.

Mushtaq Ahmad said the recent hike in the prices of medicines proved that the government was helpless before the pharmaceutical companies.

He alleged the ruling elite have $375 billion in their foreign accounts while the rest of society lives in extreme poverty.

About the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, he said a $100 billion agreement with government of Qatar will lead to corruption. He said Pakistan was unable to tap its own resources due to such mismanagement and the LNG project will produce similar results.
