Quetta Gladiators are successful because they are like a family, says Viv Richards

With Quetta Gladiators taking on Islamabad United in the inaugural Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) final match tonight, Quetta mentor stated that the main reason for his team’s success in the tournament is because they operate like a family.

“From the moment I met the team [Quetta Gladiators], I realised we can be like a family. This is why we have done so well and the reason we are where we are today. The very first day was of utmost importance because we are coming from all walks of life and for the period of time that we were going to be together it is important that we understand each other as quickly as possible. That to me is the crucial ingredient for success,” he said.

The West Indian great has attended every training session, every team-bonding event and every dressing room meeting for Quetta Gladiators.

He has been the ball boy during fielding drills, has helped players in the training nets and has motivated his side from the dugout.

He further claimed that his emotional and jubilant responses on the field are a product of the team’s faith and trust they place in him.

“It is because of the good people around. I've been in the Caribbean Premier League, I've been in the Big Bash League, but I've never been this happy. They have embraced me with open arms. That is why you see me as animated,” he added.



The veteran explained that his role in the team is to make players comfortable so that they take chances on the field.

“My job isn't about telling the guy how technically sound he may be. It is about making that guy as comfortable as possible in order for him to take the chances.”

The rare sight of Sir Viv Richards jumping out of the seat in the dugout as Aizaz Cheema bowled his last over against Peshawar Zalmi exhibited the emotional connection among players and management staff in the Quetta-based team.

“This is what I am talking about. It is a family. We believe in one another. This is one of the more important things and lessons I have learned despite my experience of playing at the highest level just seeing how relaxed people are. When you are relaxed it is amazing how many things you can accomplish.”
