Side by side: Khyber political agent stresses minority rights

The importance of safeguarding the rights of minority groups was stressed at an event held on Saturday to welcome the political agent of Khyber Agency.


“Minorities must have the right to go to pursue their aspirations and be given equal opportunities,” Capitan (retd) Khalid Mehmood, the new political agent, said while addressing participants at a function at Jirga Hall in Khyber House.


He added students belonging to minority groups should be provided be scholarships and be given financial aid for education. Moreover, he said, medical facilities should also be provided. However, he lauded the allotment of seats in levies forces for minorities.


“A quota of six seats for women has also been put aside.” The welcome ceremony was attended by tribespeople from Landikotal, Jamrud and Bara and people from minority communities, including Sikhs, Hindus and Christians.


The presidents of minority communities in Khyber Agency, Wilson Wazir, appreciated the cooperation with minorities, saying people from minority groups should continue supporting the political administration and play their role in encouraging development of Khyber Agency.
