KARACHI: The department of visual studies at the University of Karachi (KU) has introduced 3D printing for its students. On Friday, a university official said 3D printing is the process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. It has many applications, from making prototypes for manufacturing, engineering, jewellery making, architectural models, replicating other things, making medical prosthetics and more advanced versions can develop organ replacement, cartilage grafts, and nerve regeneration. Large-scale 3D printers have also been used to mass produce full-scale houses in China in less than three hours. Department chairperson Dr Duriya Kazi said they are proud to be the first design institution in Pakistan to have the 3D printer, which was built from scratch by Ali Yousuf. We acquired the printer in 2015 and Ali Yusuf has been training students to use the facility, she added.
