LAHORE: The funeral prayers of two policemen gunned down at a picket in Iqbal Town area on Wednesday night were offered on Thursday.

The prayers were held at Qila Gujjar Singh Police Lines. The bodies of the slain policemen were later taken to Miani Sahib Graveyard where they were laid to rest. Speaking on the occasion, IGP Mushtaq Sukhera eulogised the deceased policemen. He said police had been striving to nab those suspected of killing them.

CCPO Amin Wains, Operations DIG Haider Ashraf, Investigations DIG Chaudhry Sultan, all divisional SPs, the families and peers of those killed in the attack were present on the occasion. Separately, police have registered an FIR of the incident on the complaint of Iqbal Town SHO Asif Zulfiquar.

Constables Muhammad Asif and Mubashir were on-duty at a picket in Chenab Puli near Iqbal Town’s Neelam Block when they were gunned down by three unidentified gunmen. The policemen had succumbed to their injuries at the spot. Their bodies were later sent to a mortuary for autopsy.

Police also cordoned-off the area following the attack and initiated a search to nab those suspected of killing the policemen. Officials said the gunmen had fled in the direction of Moon Market after executing the attack. Police said they had shot the policemen on being directed to stop at the picket.
