What does the 'i' in your iPhone stand for?

While cutting-edge design, technology and distinct features all very well describe Apple products, have you ever paused to wonder what the ‘i’ in your iPhone actually stands for?

The most common assumption is that the 'i' stands for the person who owns the product. Well that isn’t entirely wrong. However, this wasn’t the whole idea when Apple pitched its first iMac.

When Steve Jobs, Apple co-founder, first introduced the iMac in 1998 he told people that they are targeting the "number one use that the consumers say they want to use the computer for", namely the internet.

Hence 'i' stood for the internet, in the days when the internet had just arrived and people were still discovering the world of possibilities that came with it. The iMac was launched to provide speedier access to the internet.



During his talk while introducing the iMac, Jobs said, "An iMac comes from the marriage of the excitement of the internet with the simplicity of Macintosh."

Moreover, Jobs gave the letter ‘i’ a complete identity. He said the letter ‘i’ stands for ‘information, individual instruct, inform, and inspire, and the ‘i’ aptly covers the wide range of application of Apple products even today.



Last week, it was announced that Apple is  to introduce its next iPhone and iPad models on March 15, and aims to start selling the devices in the same week, technology blog 9to5Mac reported.

Apple, which will introduce a new 4-inch iPhone, dubbed the “iPhone 5se”, and a new iPad Air at a launch event, is unlikely to take pre-orders for the new devices, the blog reported.
