SUKKUR: Electricity connections of various government departments and private consumers were disconnected due to unpaid bills on Tuesday in Sukkur, Ghotki and Khairpur districts.

Owing to dues worth billions of rupees against Taluka Municipal Administrations, Municipal Corporations, North Sindh Urban Services Corporation, water supply, street lights and irrigation departments in Sukkur, Ghotki and Khairpur, the Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco) disconnected connections of these utilities and departments.

Sepco operations superintendent engineer Abdul Ghaffar Mako told The Express Tribune that notices were issued to heads of these departments for early payment of dues but, despite repeated notices, not a single penny was paid.

He said these departments and private consumers in the three districts owe Rs9 billion to Sepco. "Besides disconnecting electricity connections of the government departments, we have also taken off 60 pole-mounted transformers," said Mako. He further said that power supply to these departments and consumers will only be restored after clearance of dues.

"We are also taking strict action against those involved in power theft," he said, adding that in case of power theft, action will be taken against the consumers and Sepco employees. He said that their priority is to minimise line losses and increase recoveries.
