KARACHI:

Police officials at Karachi Central Jail, including the superintendent, were suspended after a murder convict escaped from the high-security prison on Monday afternoon.

According to a jail official, prisoner Muhammad Hafeez who was working inside the jail quarters managed to escape from the premises.

Taking notice of the incident, Sindh home minister suspended jail superintendent SSP Ghulam Murtaza Shaikh along with other officials, which included the gate incharge head constable Zafarullah, and constables Hashmat Ali Kolachi and Safdar Hussain. He also ordered an immediate inquiry and registration of FIR against the jail officials.

Hafeez, 35, was sent to jail in September 2015 in a murder case. The case was registered at Gizri police station under sections 302 and 365 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

An official at the New Town police station said no FIR against the jail officials had been registered yet and no one had been arrested either.

In October 2014, Rangers foiled a plot to breach the jail by discovering a 40-metre-long tunnel under a nearby house.

It was reported that the suspects most likely had help from inside the prison.
