Scholar Hazrat Syed Mahmood, popularly known as Sundal Baba, passed away in Sardheri, Charsadda at the age of 138 on Sunday.

He was known as Sundal Baba because he was from Sandal village in Upper Dir. His grandson Noorwali told The Express Tribune Sundal Baba was shifted to Sardheri four years ago on the request of his disciples.

Sundal Baba had studied the Quran, Hadith and Islamic jurisprudence from a seminary of Deoband in Uttar Pradesh, India. He then moved to Hazaro in Attock from where he completed his religious education. He gained religious knowledge from a famous saint of Swat, Maulana Sandaki, who was a disciple of a friend of Maulana Hadda of Jalalabad – a famous freedom fighter in Mohmand Agency and Peshawar. On his advice, Sundal Baba took part in the struggle against the British Raj.
