KARACHI:

Goods transporters called off their strike on Friday after they were assured by Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, the transport minister and Karachi commissioner that their issues will be resolved.

The goods transporters announced the strike on Thursday to protest against the kidnappings, extortion, and heavy fines that traffic police charge them.

Khalid Khan of the transport alliance demanded the government to relax the ban on the movement of heavy vehicles on Karachi’s roads, and asked the Sindh government to give them licenced weapons so they could defend themselves in case of an emergency.

He alleged that cops harass transporters at unauthorised check-posts and take bribes from them. Khan added that dacoits on highways from Karachi to Kashmore snatch vehicles and goods from the transporters and kill the drivers.

Transport minister Mumtaz Jakhrani issued directions to the police chief to give full security to the goods transporters.

He added that all the unauthorised police check-posts will be removed and licenced weapons will be provided to owners of vehicles.
