U21 Snooker: Unseeded duo to meet in final

Tahir and Saqib’s giant-killing acts continued in semi-finals.

KARACHI: Unseeded cueists Haris Tahir and Muhammad Saqib will face each other in the final of the 2016 U21 Junior National Snooker Championship after winning their respective semi-final matches on Tuesday.

Tahir upset top seed Abdul Javaid 5-3 in a thriller to reach the final. He won the first frame 63-47, but Javaid came back to take the second 67-30. Tahir then took two straight frames 74-55, 76-41 before Javid bounced back again with 77-56, 69-22 triumphs.

However, Tahir kept his cool and won the seventh and eighth frames 65-53 and 62-54 respectively to clinch the best-of-nine match. In the second semi-final, Saqib overcame Abdul Raheem 5-4 in four hours and 45 minutes.

“Both Haris and Saqib have impressed everyone,” Naveed Kapadia, a tournament official, told The Express Tribune. “They were unseeded and yet secured upset victories throughout the event. This will be a good final, hopefully.”
