KARACHI: A number of enraged residents set a wedding hall on fire in Orangi Town after a minor girl was found dead inside the building's water tank on Sunday.

Six-year-old Pakiza, daughter of Faizur Rehman, went missing on January 25 after she and her family attended a wedding at the premises. "Pakiza went missing during a wedding," explained her father. "We searched but could not find her. Today [Sunday] we found her in the hall's water tank," Rehman claimed.

After recovering the body, the victim's relatives and neighbours reached the wedding hall to protest. The mob then turned violent and began to damage property. They also attempted to set the wedding hall on fire, blaming the hall management for Pakiza's death.

Following the incident, an extra contingent of law enforcers reached the site and calmed the protesters. The police also apprehended nearly ten staff members of the hall and initiated investigations. "The father of the victim lodged a missing complaint to the police station a few days ago," confirmed Orangi Town SP Ali Asif. "The investigations regarding the girl's death have been initiated but the police have yet to ascertain whether the girl died accidently or a criminal act was behind her death," he explained.
