Maleeha Lodhi acted as secret messenger for former army chief Kayani

Pakistan’s current envoy to the UN Maleeha Lodhi apparently acted as an informal messenger between the Obama administration and former army chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, some emails of Hillary Clinton indicate.

On Saturday, the US State Department released some 1,000 pages of emails of Hillary when she was the secretary of state and for a while used a private email account and a private server for online communication.

But the entire message delivered by Maleeha, who has also served on the same deputation in the US and Britain, on behalf of Kayani to the US State Department has been edited out.

“I got a call from Maleeha Lodhi, who is in London. She gave a message from Kayani,” Vali Nasr, who was then a senior adviser in the Office of the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, wrote on January 21, 2011.

The readout of Kayani’s message through Maleeha — running into two paragraphs — was then sent to Hillary the same day. She asked this message to be printed on January 30 – three days after Raymond Davis was arrested on charges of killing two men in Lahore. The incident had resulted in a crisis in the US-Pak relationship.

“Please print,” Hillary wrote to her aide Lauren C Jiloty on the email with the subject “latest from Pakistan on Kayani 3.0”.

The emails are being released in phases on the directions of a US court. While most of the portions of the email related to Pakistan have been heavily redacted, it does contain in full the text of the phone call between Clinton and Pakistan’s then foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar on July 3, 2012.

    Deep state works in mysterious ways. When secrecy becomes the hallmark of governance that raises the eyebrows of the masse. Vali Nasr and Maleeha Lodhi knew more than an average person. What should I make of it? It is the exclusion that creates the feelings of disillusionment. Recommend

    I am sure the army is actually punishing Kayani for his deliberate compromise on national security; in-action against terrorists, Raymond Davis episode, Abbottabad, letting black water lose in Pakistan back in 2008 to 2011 and so on.Recommend

    I could always sense – without being 100% sure – that she is a civilian member of the Deep State. This nails it. She only gets her salary from the Foreign Office, but for all work-related matters she reports to GHQ and AabparaRecommend

    “Maleeha shall be called back from UN.”

    May be she can be removed from representing Pakistan at the UN. However, it may not be possible to call her back to Pakistan as most likely, she has passport of UK or another country also, just like Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz when Musharraf was ruling the country. Recommend

    @Dr.M.M. Khan:
    Sir, With all due respects, she is not a professional diplomat but the one who entered a senior diplomatic position through the backdoor (her closeness to Benazir Bhutto). Her only qualifications were an upper middle class upbringing and her doctoral dissertation on PPP. I have read the dissertation and was not quite impressed by the quality of work. It was more descriptive than analytical. Her association with Kayani is quite understandable given both were close confidants of BB. This is what pushed Kayani also in the top brass position otherwise there were several well qualified than him as we have hundreds well qualified minds in the foreign office. Their only fault: they are not well connected to the political apparatus of the state.
    @ Punjabi: Let us not jump to conclusions. Exploring and utilizing several diplomatic channels is not unusual. Recommend

    This makes perfect sense to me. Normally the military would use Pakistan’s Ambassador to the USA but Haqqani and the military were adversaries.Recommend

    @Altaf Majid: Kayani was appointed in 2007 by Musharraf NOT by Zardari. SO closeness to Benazir was not a factor.
    @John B: 1)It is the government and not military which should be communicating. 2) Thshouldbe communicatinthrough the ambassador to US not ambassador to UN.Recommend
